Kula meeting to cover water, energy

The upcoming auction of four East Maui watershed lease areas will be among the topics at the Kula Community Association meeting Wednesday.

The meeting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kula Community Center. Refreshments will start at 6:30 p.m.

Ian Hirokawa from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources will describe the state’s intentions in its upcoming auction of the watershed lease areas. Michael Williams, Kula Community Association board member, will summarize the recommendations made by a county Water Board committee regarding potential alternative models for the ownership and management of the East Maui water system.

Meanwhile, Richard Chandler of American Electric Power will discuss the proposal to build seven new 500-foot wind turbines capable of producing 34 megawatts of electricity near the existing wind farm on Ulupalakua Ranch land.

Christine Spencer of the Maui Alzheimer’s Association will describe early signs of the disease.

And, the association will discuss efforts to get people counted in the 2020 census.
