WAILUKU -- A man was arrested Sunday night after he allegedly shattered a vehicle window to spray a teenager with glass in the McDonald's parking lot on Dairy Road in Kahului.

Daniel Opupele, 35, of Kahului was charged with first-degree criminal property damage and two counts of second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer.

Opupele started banging on the car while two teenagers were inside and waiting for a third teenager who was ordering food in the restaurant, according to police. Opupele was asking for money before using his elbow to shatter a window, spraying one teenager with shards of glass, police said.

When officers located Opupele across the street and were arresting him, he kicked one officer in the abdomen and another in the chest, police reported.

Opupele was arrested at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, according to police records.

During his initial appearance Tuesday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Jeffery Temas asked that Opupele's bail be increased from $5,000 to $15,000.

Deputy Public Defender Rachel Miyoshi asked for minimal bail.

"The defendant doesn't really remember this incident," she said. "He said he was drunk at the time, and he is disabled."

Judge Blaine Kobayashi questioned whether Opupele was disabled.

"It looks like he had no problem at all engaging in multiple physical acts, not just with the alleged victim but in the incident involving his attempted arrest by the police officers as well," Kobayashi said.

He set bail at $15,000.

Opupele was ordered to have no contact with the victims and to stay away from the McDonald's restaurant.
