Visitor airlifted off East Maui trail following fall

The Maui News

A 68-year-old female visitor, who suffered a leg injury on a trail near Wailua Falls in East Maui, was airlifted to safety by the Fire Department’s Air One helicopter Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters received the call of the injured hiker at 12:43 p.m., and an engine responded to Mile Post 45 on Hana Highway, said Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro. Firefighters located the hiker and treated the injured woman, who was not able to hike out due to back and leg pain caused by a fall.

Air One airlifted the woman to a nearby landing zone about two hours after the call. She was taken by ambulance to the Hana Medical Center for evaluation and treatment, Yatsushiro said.

The woman’s injuries were not life-threatening, he said.
