5K race in South Maui a family affair

First photo: Ten-year-old Makena-Lee Paclib crosses the finish line with her mother, Nichole, at the 9th annual Maui 5K run Sunday morning in Maalaea. Nichole Paclib said she gave Makena-Lee, who attends Kula School, “a little bit of a tug and encouragement” to complete the race. Paclib said she ran to provide “moral support” for Makena-Lee and her other three children — daughter Makayla-Lee, 12; son Hunter-Lee, 11; and son Samson-Lee, 6 — who also ran the race, with Samson-Lee finishing second in his age division. “It was cold, but it was fun,” Paclib said. “They all had a good time.” The Maui Ocean Center ran this year’s event in partnership with the nonprofit Run For Fitness as a fundraiser for fitness programs in Maui schools. Nearly 300 people participated in the 5K run and 1-mile walk/run.

Second photo: Texas resident Joseph Friedman, who completed the Maui 5K run on his 85th birthday Sunday, gets a special award from emcee Nancy Robberson. Friedman, who wanted to celebrate his birthday on Maui, was joined at the race by his wife and other family members, including three grandsons and their girlfriends.
