A Wailuku man was arrested Tuesday night in Kihei after he allegedly rear-ended another vehicle, then confronted and punched the other driver before running away, according to police.
Winson Kajidrik, 20, was arrested after he later called police dispatch to report his vehicle, which was left at the collision scene, had been stolen, police said.
He was charged with first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, third-degree assault, false reporting to law enforcement authorities, DUI, inattention to driving and duty to give information and render aid.
The collision occurred at 6:48 p.m. Tuesday when Kajidrik's vehicle collided into the rear of a Mustang rental car while traveling south on Piilani Highway near Kanani Road, police said. Kajidrik allegedly approached and confronted the Mustang driver, a Montana man who reported he was punched in the face while he was sitting in the driver's seat, according to police.
Kajidrik and other occupants of the vehicle ran from the area, police said.
After he called dispatch at 7:24 p.m. to report his vehicle had been stolen, responding officers described Kajidrik as highly intoxicated and "extremely uncooperative," refusing to provide his identification, police said.
Kajidrik was arrested at 8:23 p.m. in the 2500 block of South Kihei Road after he was identified by the victim, police said.
Court records show Kajidrik's bail was reduced to $500, which he posted to be released.
