County: Female visitor is Maui’s 1st COVID-19 case

The County of Maui confirmed Maui’s first positive case of COVID-19 in a female visitor currently in isolation.

A person under investigation was tested, results came back positive and the county was informed Saturday, according to a County of Maui news release after 8 p.m. Saturday.

The woman reportedly was searching for accommodations in Lahaina after finding out she had COVID-19, according to an anonymous source with information on the case.

Multiple attempts by The Maui News earlier Saturday to confirm the case with the state Department of Health Joint Information Center were unsuccessful.

“I am unable to confirm at this time, and will get back to you on this,” Janice Okubo, state DOH spokeswoman, emailed around 6 p.m.

Multiple calls to accommodations in West Maui where she was reportedly staying went directly to voicemail Saturday night.

The female visitor continues to be monitored by the state DOH, the county said.

Gov. David Ige will be hosting a press conference at 1 p.m. Sunday to provide details.

This is the state’s sixth case of new coronavirus.

Earlier Saturday, the fifth case was confirmed on Oahu by Honolulu government officials, according to Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Saturday morning, the third and fourth cases on Kauai were disclosed.

The state's second case was an elderly man who became ill while he was in Washington state. He was tested when he returned to Hawaii.

The state’s first case was confirmed in a man who had been on a cruise ship from California to Mexico that had other infected passengers. The man fell ill after flying home to Oahu from Mexico after the Grand Princess cruise that was scheduled Feb. 11-21.
