Undercover electronic operation nabs Kihei man
He’s charged with enticement of minor
A Kihei man was arrested Friday after he allegedly tried to lure someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl to his car, according to police.
Eric Duncan, 34, was charged with first-degree electronic enticement of a child.
According to an affidavit filed in court, an online investigation was initiated Friday in Kihei with an undercover agent posing as a 13-year-old girl.
Someone with the screen name “What u need” started a private chat with the agent’s profile on a social media application at 10:25 a.m. Friday before beginning a text message conversation between the two that became sexual, according to the affidavit.
After “What u need” agreed to meet the agent, a surveillance team saw a man, later identified as Duncan, at the location, according to police. From there, he was told to go to a Kihei address, where he allegedly tried to lure the agent posing as the girl to his car in a non-face-to-face message, police said. When she refused, Duncan drove away, police said.
Police reported stopping Duncan at Alanui Ke Alii and Kaneapua Lane in Kihei.
During Duncan’s initial appearance Monday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Lewis Littlepage asked for Duncan’s bail to be increased from $20,000 to $100,000.
“The defendant is a danger to the community,” Littlepage said.
He said Duncan, who originally is from Indiana, has been in the state for four years.
Deputy Public Defender Tyler Stevenson opposed an increase, saying the $20,000 bail set by police was already more than what would normally be set for that level of crime.
Duncan has no prior record and is employed, Stevenson said.
Judge John Breen granted the prosecution’s request, increasing bail to $100,000.
“The nature of this charge is so serious, even though you’re presumed innocent, I don’t want to take that kind of risk,” Breen said.
Duncan was ordered to stay off the internet and not make appointments to meet with anyone under age 18 who isn’t a family member.
