100th birthday celebration

Hermina Silva Pacheco, a resident of Hale Makua in Kahului, turned 100 on April 5. Staff at Hale Makua celebrated her birthday April 6 with a birthday cupcake. Hermina is pictured with Teresa Lopes (clockwise from lower left), Jodi Horton, Kelly Yokouchi, Lorie Tecson, Kelly Rich, Sherylle Mamuad and Karissa Sanders. Because of concerns about COVID-19, visitors (including family members) cannot currently visit Hale Makua. Hermina was born in Paia to parents John Braga Silva and Elisa Silva. She had four children; two boys and two girls. She worked at Libby, McNeil Pinneapple Cannery in Haiku as a packer. She was an excellent seamstress and baker of cakes, according to daughter, Linda Jacintho. Hermina’s husband, George Pacheco Sr., died Feb. 9, 1988, when he was 74 years old. He was an employee of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar. The couple gardened together and loved to drive the cane haul roads in their blue Datsun truck.
