Affidavit: Man who stole jewelry worth 100K had accomplice

Some items were pawned, documents say

WAILUKU — A man charged with burglarizing a closed Paia jewelry store allegedly gave some of the jewelry to another man, who pawned some of the valuables, according to court documents.

Chase Mociun, 37, is charged with burglary of a building during an emergency period, first-degree theft during an emergency period, first-degree theft, first-degree criminal property damage and conspiracy to commit first-degree theft.

The burglary occurred at 2:55 a.m. March 30 at Earth Love Treasures at 120 Baldwin Ave., with jewelry valued at more than $100,000 stolen in the break-in, police reported.

Mociun was “taking advantage of a local emergency and decided to burglarize a closed business,” Deputy Prosecutor Lewis Littlepage said in court Monday while asking for Mociun’s bail to be increased to $125,000 from the $105,000 set by police.

According to an affidavit filed in court to support the charges, police received information that Mociun was selling jewelry with precious stones, matching the description of the stolen jewelry, and executed warrants to search his girlfriend’s residence in Paia the morning of April 7. Police later recovered jewelry valued at $14,340 that she reported finding hidden at her residence, according to the affidavit.

Mociun was located at 2:33 p.m. April 7 at a store in Makawao and was arrested, police said. Later that afternoon, police made contact with another man in Kahului after learning he had some of the stolen jewelry, according to the affidavit. The man told police he had sold the jewelry at Central Maui Gold and Loan pawnshop in Kahului, receiving about $980, the affidavit said.

In a search of the pawnshop the following day, police reported recovering 10 pieces of jewelry valued at $34,000.

According to the complaint against Mociun, the pawnshop employee allegedly failed to record the receipt of the stolen jewelry or precious stones and didn’t fully document the payment for them. The 31-year-old Kihei man was arrested April 8 and was later released pending further investigation, police records show.

During Mociun’s initial appearance Monday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Public Defender William Pannell asked that Mociun be released on supervision.

“This is the first time he’s been accused or charged with any crimes similar to this,” Pannell said.

He said Mociun lives in Paia with his girlfriend.

Littlepage said the girlfriend told police that “she kicked him out because he had informed her that he had burglarized this business.”

Pannell said Mociun reported he could live with his parents.

Judge Blaine Kobayashi set bail at $50,000 for Mociun.

He was ordered to stay away from Earth Love Treasures, Central Maui Gold and Loan, the employee and the man who allegedly pawned the jewelry.

If convicted of the charges, Mociun could face longer prison terms because the crimes occurred during a disaster emergency relief period.
