State health officials said this morning that there were two more coronavirus deaths reported late Monday, one on Oahu and one on Maui, and that the Maui fatality is linked to the hospital’s outbreak.
The Maui fatality is the first one tied by state officials to the Maui Memorial Medical Center coronavirus cluster, which began in mid-March and had swelled to nearly 60 cases under investigation.
Maui’s Fortunato Genobia, a great great grandfather, was 89 when he died, a family member said Tuesday. He was hospitalized at Maui Memorial since late last year, the state Department of Health said.
The Oahu man who died was 65 years or older. The man had underlying health conditions and was hospitalized in late March. After getting better, he had been discharged, but his health subsequently declined and he passed away at home yesterday.
Maui Memorial Medical Center’s cluster, the largest outbreak in the state, has grown to 56 people — 36 staff and 20 patients — according to the state DOH. The state said the cluster may have begun with a health care worker who reported to work while ill with the virus.
These deaths bring the total in the state to 12 since tracking began on Feb. 2.
“We are saddened by these additional deaths and the toll the pandemic is taking on the families and friends of those affected,” said Gov. David Ige in a statement. “This is a serious disease especially for those with preexisting health conditions and older adults. It is critical that we all comply with the stay at home order, practice social distancing, and continue to wear a mask whenever we go out to protect others.”
Also at noon today, the state DOH said there are two newly reported cases of COVID-19, both in Maui County, which now has a total of 110.
The state total is now 586. The rest of the counties’ totals remained the same as yesterday. Honolulu county with 385 cases; Hawaii county with 64 and Kauai county with 21. Six Hawaii residents have been diagnosed outside of the state.
