Texas visitor disobeys quarantine order several times
Houston man is arrested; opts to leave voluntarily
A Texas visitor, who repeatedly disobeyed mandatory quarantine orders by leaving his Wailea hotel this week, was arrested Tuesday night, police said.
William Lefear, 34, of Houston was later released pending further investigation, said police Lt. Audra Sellers on Wednesday afternoon.
She said the man voluntarily elected to leave Maui and was scheduled to depart Wednesday.
Police Chief Tiovli Faaumu said Lefear arrived on Maui with others, who were complying with the quarantine requirement. The chief also commended the staff of the Residence Inn by Marriott Maui Wailea, who notified police of the man violating quarantine orders.
“The hotel did their due diligence,” Faaumu said. “We are working side by side with the Visitors Bureau and airport officials. We want to reassure people we are helping follow up with the folks coming in.”
Sellers added, “If you come to the island, we’re checking up on you and holding you accountable.”
Lefear’s quarantine was scheduled to end May 11.
Police said that around 11:12 p.m. Monday, Lefear left his Wailea hotel and returned around 1 a.m. Tuesday.
Around 11:50 a.m. Tuesday, police contacted Lefear in his hotel room. Lefear told police that he was unaware of the mandatory quarantine and needed some supplies for the room. He indicated that he would not be leaving again and understood the rules.
He was educated on the rules and orders numerous times and was warned and reprimanded for violating those orders.
At around 7:50 p.m. Tuesday, police again were contacted about Lefear violating the emergency orders; he was seen leaving the hotel around 7:45 p.m.
Police arrested Lefear at 9:26 p.m. Tuesday.
There have been more than 25 arrests in Maui County and hundreds of citations for violations of public health emergency orders related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
From March 28 through Wednesday morning, Maui police issued 688 citations for people violating public health emergency rules. The majority of the citations continue to be handed out in the Kihei District, where 28 citations have been given out Tuesday and Wednesday.
Out-of-state visitors continue to visit Maui. One flight Monday from the Mainland to Maui carried 17 visitors and 29 residents in addition to the flight crew. There were no Mainland flights to Maui on Tuesday.
