Daylin Abernathy, 10, helps half-buried brother Matt, 8, reach for a beach toy at Kihei’s Kamaole I Beach Park on Saturday morning. Looking on are parents Kiaw and Craig Abernathy. The family was one of many to take to the sand to play and relax after restrictions against sedentary activities like sunbathing were lifted on Maui County beaches. Craig Abernathy, a State Department office manager stationed in Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom Penh, said they have been living in Kihei since early March. He said they were flown out of Cambodia as the coronavirus pandemic was ramping up and have been doing online schooling and teleworking ever since. “We feel blessed to be able to work from here,” he said.

Families played volleyball, relaxed on the sand or played in the waves Saturday, the first day that restrictions on sedentary activities were lifted at Maui County beaches.

Starting at $4.80/week.
