Kanaha park reopens today
Kanaha Beach Park, one of the last county parks still closed to the public, will reopen starting today, Maui County Mayor Michael Victorino announced Wednesday.
The beach park will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. It’s been closed to allow the county Parks and Recreation Department to make repairs to waterlines, benches and posts, as well as to remove large debris and vegetation. American with Disabilities Act stall markings were also repainted and the restrooms were deep cleaned.
“For those who have been asking, windsurfers, good luck, but remember, take care of what you have, because if it’s not taken care of and something breaks out, we’ll close it just like we can close any other park,” Victorino said during his daily news conference Wednesday.
Waiale Park remains closed due to the temporary emergency shelters built for people displaced by the pandemic. Victorino said that 12 people were relocated from Kanaha to the Waiale shelters. Another 10 people were moved to the Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center.
On Monday, Coach Spencer Shiraishi Memorial Pool in Kahului and Wailuku Pool will reopen for 45-minute lap swimming and walking only. Kokua Pool remains closed for major renovations. All swimmers must make a reservation by calling 270-6116.
County Managing Director Sandy Baz said indoor gatherings of 50 people and outdoor gatherings of 100 with modifications also will be allowed starting Monday. Groups within gatherings are still limited to 10 people, with exceptions for sports practices and other commercial activities that were approved.
County officials received state approval for the resumption of some outdoor organized team sports, such as 12-person canoe paddling. Paddlers should continue to follow health and safety protocols and stay home when sick.
Baz said that paddles and other equipment should not be shared. Gloves and masks are encouraged but not required.
Other outdoor organized sports such as baseball, soccer, softball, volleyball and basketball are being phased in at county park facilities. Team and skill-based practices resume Monday as phase one, with competitive play resuming July 1.
County outdoor basketball courts are open on a first-come, first-served basis.
“We need to continue working very hard to make this reopening very possible,” Victorino said. “I’d like to add to it, I’d like to do more, I’d like to do more swimming activities and maybe even group swimming, swimming practices for swim clubs– all of that really depends on how these next few weeks run.”
