Two health centers in Maui County will be receiving nearly $6 million in grants to provide medical care and enabling services to Native Hawaiians.
U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard announced Friday that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is awarding nearly $9 million in grants to Native Hawaiian health centers, with $3.3 million going toward Hui No Ke Ola Pono on Maui, $2.6 million to Na Pu'uwai on Molokai and $3 million to Ho'ola Lahui Hawai'i on Kauaui. The funds are part of a continuing grant.
"For far too long, kanaka maoli have dealt with disproportionately greater health challenges than other ethnic groups in their own homeland," Gabbard said in a news release Sunday. "Continuing federal support for Native Hawaiian health centers will get lifesaving care to Native Hawaiians, making sure that our health care system is equipped to meet these needs."
Native Hawaiian health centers offer access to health education, health promotion and disease prevention services. They also provide nutrition programs, screening and control of hypertension and diabetes, immunizations and basic primary care services.
