Big flower actually tons of tiny ones

Tiny flowers, or florets, make up the center of a Kula sunflower in this photo taken earlier this month. The large head of a sunflower is an inflorescence or composite flower made up of two kinds of florets. Disc florets form the center and ray florets bear the outer ring of petal-like structures. A sunflower head can contain between 1,000 and 2,000 disc florets, each with the potential to form a seed.
