Grand Wailea food giveaway
Grand Wailea Maui staffers, most of them on furlough from their jobs, hand out 1,589 food boxes Friday morning in front of the hotel. Lines of cars and trucks of people waiting to get food stretched for at least a mile, with one extending all the way to Piilani Highway. “The strength of a community is when neighbors come together to help each other,” said Grand Wailea Managing Director J.P. Oliver. Oliver said the food was provided by the hotel’s parent company, Blackstone Group LP, and was distributed with help from the Maui Food Bank. He said the boxes contained rice, chicken, Spam, potatoes, onions, apples, canned corn, beans and peas. Blackstone donated $100,000 to purchase the food that was distributed Friday at the Grand Wailea and its sister Maui property, The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
