WAILUKU -- A 55-year-old man was arrested after allegedly swinging a machete at his wife after an argument between them turned physical Monday morning at a storage facility in Kahului.
Reinhard Laschinski was charged with second-degree assault and abuse.
According to a declaration filed in court to support the charges, the couple were in the Extra Space Storage building on Ala Makani Street at 11:05 a.m. when he slapped her in the face multiple times with both hands. Then he pushed her to the ground, grabbed a machete and swung it at her, causing small lacerations to her right arm and right leg, according to the declaration.
She reported suffering pain and injury.
He was arrested at the storage facility.
During Laschinski's initial appearance Monday in Wailuku District Court, Deputy Prosecutor Byron Fujieda asked for bail to be increased to $6,000 for Laschinski.
Deputy Public Defender Gustavo Gonzalez opposed any increase from the $2,000 bail set by police and asked that Laschinski be released on supervision.
"He is currently houseless, but he is seeking to find a home and employment, which is difficult during this pandemic we are in," Gonzalez said.
Judge Kirstin Hamman denied Laschinski's request to be released and kept bail at $2,000, saying she was concerned about the allegations of violence.
Laschinski was ordered to stay away from his wife and her residence in Haiku.
