WAILUKU -- A 64-year-old Wailea man who was arrested Tuesday for allegedly driving a car toward a police officer, trespassing at the Kihei Police Station and threatening to bomb the station, has been formally charged with multiple counts.
Thomas Richter was being held on $22,000 bail at the Wailuku Police Station on Thursday morning.
He is charged with first-degree attempted assault on a police officer, two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, resisting an order to stop and first-degree criminal trespassing, according to police records.
Police had new information on the case Thursday and said that Richter admitted telling a manager of a large supply store that he was planning on blowing up the Kihei Police Station.
And during a police investigation, police said that Richter had a shopping cart filled with bricks, a sledgehammer and portable propane tanks. He later admitted he was going to use the items to damage the Kihei station and Kihei marked patrol vehicles.
Police said a man called Maui police multiple times threatening to bomb the Kihei Police Station on Tuesday. He was then seen at the Kihei Police Station, and when asked to stop while driving in his vehicle, the man drove toward an officer. The officer was able to get out of the way and was unharmed.
The man then drove to Kahului where he was subsequently arrested, police said.
