A Wailuku man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after arranging to meet someone whom he thought was a 14-year-old girl for sex.
Senior U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway sentenced Nolan Nishida, 37, in federal court Thursday to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years of supervised release for attempting to entice a minor to engage in unlawful sexual activity, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Nishida also must pay a $5,000 fine under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015.
According to court documents and information presented at trial, Nishida engaged in a series of online chats with an undercover agent posing as a 14-year-old girl on Oct. 11, 2017. During their conversations, Nishida arranged to meet the girl in person for sex. He traveled to the agreed-upon location and was arrested.
On Feb. 13, Nishida was convicted following a three-day trial in U.S. District Court in Honolulu.
"This case is yet another step in the right direction in protecting Hawaii's keiki," said Kenji M. Price, U.S. Attorney for the District of Hawaii.
The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Margaret Nammar and Morgan Early.
It was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Department of Justice to fight child exploitation and abuse.
