Brush fire burns 1 acre in Waikapu on Sunday

Fire crews were working to extinguish a small brush fire in Waikapu on Sunday afternoon, according to the Maui Fire Department.

The fire was first reported at 12:18 p.m. along Kuihelani Highway at Waiko Road.

The 1.32-acre blaze of brush and kiawe trees was brought under control at around 1:30 p.m., the Fire Department said. Crews were mopping up and working to completely extinguish the fire.

Temperatures were in the mid-80s, with gusty trade winds of 10 to 20 mph.

The cause of the fire was undetermined. There were no known damages as of 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Engines from Wailuku, Kahului and Makawao responded to the incident, along with a mini from Wailuku, a wildland unit from Kahului, tankers from Kahului and Wailea, the department's Air One helicopter and a battalion chief.
