Maui Waena student tests positive for COVID-19

The Maui News

Maui Waena Intermediate School on Wednesday informed parents that a student at the school has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a Facebook post Wednesday night with the letter to parents, the school said currently there are no positive COVID-19 cases involving staff members.

The student was last on campus on Aug. 20. Safety guidelines were followed including the wearing of masks. The school said the interaction falls outside what would be considered an “infectious period,” according to parameters provided by the state Department of Health.

The school reminded students and parents to do a wellness check before coming to school. If a household member has been tested for COVID-19 or is exhibiting symptoms, people are asked to call the school so it can assess the situation and determine if a visit is necessary or appropriate.

Principal Jacquelyn McCandless also commended the staff for following recommended safety protocols, such as wearing masks, social distancing and being mindful of their movement on campus.

Starting at $4.80/week.
