Search for missing diver suspended

The Maui News

The Coast Guard has suspended the active search for a Hana man who was reported missing Friday after he didn’t return from spearfishing off Paia.

William Scott Stanga, 52, was last seen at about 3 p.m. Friday by friends snorkeling near Kuau Bay Beach, which is below Mama’s Fish House, police said. When he didn’t return, friends called 911 to report he was overdue.

The Coast Guard suspended the search after sunset Monday after working with the Maui Fire Department to conduct 35 searches covering 621 square nautical miles with no sign of Stanga, Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer Jason Brian, a Sector Honolulu watchstander, said in a news release.

“We extend our condolences to the Stanga family during this trying time,” he said. “These types of cases are always the hardest for all involved and we wish the outcome had been different.”

The search was suspended pending new information, Brian said.

Stanga, who goes by the name Scott, was described as Caucasian, 6 feet tall and weighing 175 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the police nonemergency number at 244-6400 or 911 in an emergency.
