First photo: Police Sgts. Jan Pontanilla (left) and Joy Medeiros help load trash into a backhoe at West Kamehameha Avenue and Kaulawahine Street in Kahului on Wednesday morning. County Department of Transportation employee Joey Fernandez and Public Works Department employee Kurt Furomoto help with the cleanup, which also included cleaning and sanitizing a nearby Maui Bus stop. Pontanilla, who heads the police Critical Outreach and Response through Education program, said homeless people in the area were offered services and one person was taken to the shelter. Others declined. The items cleared from the sidewalk on both sides of Kamehameha Avenue were left behind by a man who told police he didn't want the trash he had collected from trash bins.
