State Department of Public Safety officials on Wednesday still were investigating a disturbance at Maui Community Correctional Center on Tuesday involving inmates who refused to go back into their cells.

Public Safety spokeswoman Toni Schwartz said Wednesdays that the incident was in Module A, where a quarantine had been initiated as a precaution due to possible contacts with an inmate who was pending a COVID-19 test result.

The test was found to be negative, and the quarantine was lifted Tuesday night, she said.

Schwartz said the disturbance "is under active investigation to determine all who were involved and why it happened."

The incident started at 2 p.m. and was contained by 2:45 p.m. and involved inmates who refused to go back into their cells in Module A. It led jail staff to activate emergency response teams of adult correctional officers to de-escalate the situation, the department said.

Schwartz said the team "used nonlethal means, including the deployment of pepper balls and bean bag rounds, to gain compliance and bring order quickly back to the module."

Inmates were evaluated Tuesday by medical staff for possible injuries. There was no major damage to the module. A couple of correctional staff reported minor injuries, the department said.

Module A was repaired following a riot at MCCC on March 11, 2019, that left millions of dollars in damage.
