Inmates refused to go back into their cells in one module at the Maui Community Correctional Center on Tuesday afternoon, leading staff to activate emergency response teams to de-escalate the situation, the state Department of Public Safety reported.

Order was restored by 2:45 p.m., the department said.

"Staff followed their training to squash the attempted disturbance fast," Maria Cook, deputy director for administration of the Department of Public Safety, said in a news release. "I commend them for effectively and professionally returning calm to the module during these trying times."

Inmates were being evaluated by medical staff for possible injuries, the department said. A couple of correctional staff members reported minor injuries.

No major damage was reported to the module, which was "in order and ready for dinner service," according to the news release.

An investigation is underway. Police will handle the criminal investigation, while the Department of Public Safety conducts an internal probe.

A riot in two modules at the jail in March 2019 caused millions of dollars in damage.
