Rescuer helps kayaker to shore

An ocean safety officer aboard rescue watercraft helped a kayaker to shore Wednesday afternoon in strong winds, a fire official said.

Lahaina firefighters also responded to the 2:36 p.m. call reporting two women in kayaks in distress about 200 yards off Milepost 14 on Honoapiilani Highway, said Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro.

He said the two were near Olowalu and having difficulty returning to shore, with strong winds blowing offshore. One woman fell off her kayak and swam to shore, Yatsushiro said.

He said the officer aboard the rescue watercraft from Hanakaoo Beach Park made contact with the second kayaker and brought her and the kayak to shore.

Both women were Maui residents in their 30s.

No injuries were reported.
