Movie theaters finally among island facilities allowed to reopen

Movie theaters, the bowling alley, commercial event operators and other businesses and activities will be allowed to reopen starting Tuesday, county officials said Friday.
Josiah Nishita, county deputy managing director, said during the county news conference that movie theaters may restart with "strict provisions to maintain health and safety."
Maui's one bowling alley, Maui Bowling Center in Wailuku, has a plan set up for reopening with COVID-19 guidelines in place, he added.
Ocean-related competitions, including swim and surf competitions, may commence. However, competition in pools will remain closed.
Outdoor county courts, such as tennis and basketball courts, will have extended hours until 8 p.m. starting Tuesday.
Also, commercial event operators at outdoor venues will be allowed to reopen with certain restrictions, such as maintaining a capacity of 100 including staff. This includes luau and weddings. This could possibly include the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's amphitheater if MACC officials follow the guidelines, a county spokesman said.
Nightclubs and concert halls will remain closed.
Social gatherings will remain at 10 people or fewer, according to Mayor Michael Victorino.
