Police are increasing distracted driving enforcement, ticketing drivers using cellphones and other mobile electronic devices through Monday as part of the national “U Drive. U Text. U Pay” campaign. A cellphone violation carries a $297 fine, with the money going to the state general fund. On Tuesday, police traffic officers issued a few dozen tickets in Paia and arrested one driver on a warrant after he was stopped for a seat belt violation, said DUI Task Force Sgt. Nick Krau. Officers were primarily looking for drivers using cellphones, “but we’re not going to ignore people that aren’t wearing their seat belts,” Krau said. “Compliance has gotten a lot better, and that’s good. When we see high compliance, then we see fatality numbers come down. That’s our ultimate goal.”
