The Maui Hub, an online local farmers market, was approved as a Double Up Food Bucks retailer, meaning that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program/Electronic Benefit Transfer or food stamp customers will get a 50 percent discount on local fruits, vegetables and eggs up to $50 per day.
Da Bux program took effect this week at pickup sites in Central Maui, Kihei, Upcountry and Haiku. Customers do not need to bring their Da Bux card, just their EBT card, to the pickup site.
MauiHub.org will deduct the discount and get reimbursed.
The discount on local eggs will end Dec. 30 and the maximum daily discount will be cut to $20.
Maui Hub is an online local farmers market where customers place custom orders, choosing from Maui farmers and producers of value-added products. It was established in early April as the pandemic began to take hold.
The hub's intention is to be a permanent part of Maui's food infrastructure with its primary focus to make local, healthy, fresh produce and products affordable and accessible to low income families, kupuna, homeless people and nonprofit organizations that serve them, the announcement last week said.
The online MauiHub.org store is open from noon Saturday through 11 p.m. Tuesday for pickup the following Saturday at five pickup sites: UH-Maui College in Kahului, behind Ace Hardware in Kihei, Kulamalu in Upcountry, next to Jaws Country Store in Haiku and Choice Health Bar in Lahaina.
The Lahaina site does not accept SNAP/EBT.
