Police issue more face mask citations
Although beachgoers appear to be social distancing, masks are nowhere to be seen Thursday afternoon at Kamaole II Beach in Kihei. Maui police have been ramping up enforcement of face mask violations under a special task force through Nov. 15, following the opening of the state to trans-Pacific travelers last month. County officials have said that people must wear masks while sunbathing or doing other sedentary activities on the beach or at the pool. The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo

Another 29 citations were issued in the Lahaina district Wednesday night for face mask violations, as a police task force continued enforcement of the public health emergency rules.

The citations were handed out in areas including Front Street and parks, said Maui police spokeswoman Lt. Audra Sellers.

On Molokai, she said a 47-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman were arrested for travel-related quarantine violations Wednesday night after arriving on the island from Honolulu.

Police records show the woman was released pending further investigation to take a flight back to Oahu on Thursday morning. The man was transported to Maui on Thursday.

Patrol officers have been assigned to the task force through Nov. 15 as part of a campaign to address face mask violations, following the opening of the state to trans-Pacific travelers last month.

Under state and county emergency rules, people are required to wear face masks in public, except when exercising, eating, drinking or smoking.

Those who are cited for violations are required to appear in court for the misdemeanor offense. A conviction for violating public health emergency rules carries a fine of up to $5,000 and up to one year in jail.
