Maui County's legislators kept their leadership positions in the House and Senate ahead of the 31st Legislature session that opens Jan. 20, according to announcements from both chambers.

Sen. J. Kalani English, who represents East Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoolawe, will continue as majority leader.

"With the election now over, it is important to quickly organize members of the Senate so that we can begin the important work of preparing for the upcoming legislative session," English said in a news release Wednesday. "We are confident that these new committee assignments are reflective of our practice of making the best use of our members' skills and experiences."

English is also the vice-chairman of the Public Safety, Intergovernmental and Military Affairs Committee and a member of both the Transportation and Ways and Means committees.

Central Maui Sen. Gil Keith-Agaran will continue as vice-chairman for both the Ways and Means Committee and the Water and Land Committee. He is also a member of the Higher Education Committee.

Sen. Roz Baker will maintain her position as chairwoman of the Commerce and Consumer Protection Committee as well as vice-chairwoman of the Health Committee. She is also a member of the Public Safety, Intergovernmental and Military Affairs Committee.

Sen. Ron Kouchi of Kauai will still serve as Senate president, with Sens. Michelle Kidani as vice president, Dru Mamo Kanuha as majority caucus leader, Les Ihara Jr. as majority policy leader and Kurt Fevella as minority leader and floor leader.

In the House, West Maui Rep. Angus McKelvey heads the Government Reform Committee, while Central Maui Rep. Justin Woodson continues to lead the Education committee.

Rep. Scott Saiki of Oahu remains House speaker, while Reps. John Mizuno will serve as vice-speaker, Della Au Belatti as majority leader and Dee Morikawa as majority floor leader.

The House said in a news release Thursday that it would complete the assignments to include the appointment of committee vice-chairs and committee members soon.
