WAILUKU — Bail was set at $1 million for a man who allegedly set fire to a parked van while a woman was sleeping in it, police said.
Shiane Marumoto, 39, of Kahului was charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree arson. He also was arrested on a contempt-of-court warrant.
Police and firefighters responded to the fire around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday while the van was parked fronting the Kenolio Recreation Complex at 131 S. Kihei Road. The van was engulfed in flames before firefighters extinguished the fire, police said.
The woman who had been in the van told police she had noticed Marumoto yelling in the area when she parked the van. Shortly afterward, she fell asleep in the van. She reported hearing the passenger door of the van suddenly slam and opened the door to see Marumoto walking toward the van, police said.
The woman said she went back to sleep before awaking to intense heat and seeing flames, police said. She quickly left the van and wasn’t injured, police said.
The woman reported that Marumoto had threatened to kill her a few months ago, police said.
A fire investigator determined the fire had been intentionally and criminally set, police said.
Marumoto was located in the area and arrested at 4:55 a.m. Tuesday.
During his initial appearance Thursday in Wailuku District Court, Marumoto was ordered to stay away from the woman and to not return to the area of the fire.
