‘Village by the Sea’ takes top prize in poster contest

Maui artist Jim Kingwell's watercolor, "Village by the Sea," was selected as the winner of the 31st annual Lahaina Poster Contest during the Friday Night is Art Night event at Village Galleries in Lahaina on Dec. 18.

This year's contest drew 36 entries, all of which will be on display at the gallery through Jan. 8.

Kingwell received a prize of $1,500. Jill Ireland also received a $250 juror's award for her acrylic painting of Lahaina's banyan tree.

The Lahaina Restoration Foundation will produce a numbered, signed and limited edition of 1,000 posters, which will be for sale at Village Galleries and other locations. Proceeds will fund ongoing promotional efforts for Lahaina town.

Kingwell will sign posters by request from 5 to 8 p.m. during the Friday Night is Art Night on Jan. 8. Village Galleries is located at 120 Dickenson St. in Lahaina and is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
