High winds and big surf are expected to continue into the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
A wind advisory for all of Maui County has been extended until 4 a.m. today. On Thursday, the weather service predicted northeast winds of 15 to 30 mph with localized gusts over 55 mph. Winds this powerful can down trees and cause power outages, with the strongest gusts occurring where winds blow over ridges and accelerate downslope.
Motorists, especially those in high-profile vehicles, should drive with extreme caution.
Residents should also be prepared for power outages and avoid walking under overhanging tree limbs.
Meanwhile, a high surf warning was also extended until 4 a.m. today, with surf of 20 to 25 feet expected along north- and west-facing shores of Molokai and Maui, and waves of 15 to 20 feet along west-facing shores of Molokai.
Impacts may include ocean water occasionally sweeping across beaches, very strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents. Breaking waves also may impact harbors and make navigating harbor channels dangerous.
The weather service warned that anyone entering the water could face significant injury or death.
