St. Anthony to honor deacon

St. Anthony Church in Wailuku is planning to acknowledge recently retired deacon Stephen Maglente on Jan. 24.

Maglente, who retired Dec. 28, has been a longtime parishioner at St. Anthony. He and his wife Momi were active members of the church while raising their four children: Shannon, Diren, Laurene and Joy.

The Maglentes took on the baptism preparation class 30 years ago and were also very active on the team of presenters for the Catholic Engaged Encounter weekends.

After four years of preparation in the Diaconate Program, Maglente was ordained a deacon in 2001 and was commissioned to serve at St. Anthony.

For 19 years, Maglente has always made himself available for baptisms, car blessings, house blessings, counseling and marriage preparation. He has preached at the Masses, assisted the priest at the altar and prayed with people in need of spiritual guidance. He also served as a spiritual director for the St. Anthony Prayer Group.
