Man arrested with drugs, firearms

The Maui News

WAILUKU — A man arrested this week in a felony drug investigation was ordered to repost bail or turn himself in at the jail Thursday, after his bail was surrendered in a pending felony drug case.

Dale Cambra, 59, who is also known as Louis Dale Cambra Jr., was arrested Monday night, then was released pending further investigation, according to police records.

He was arrested after police executed a search warrant and recovered 1 pound of methamphetamine, three rifles, a handgun, brass knuckles, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Martin said during a hearing for Cambra on Thursday in 2nd Circuit Court.

Martin said the arrest “involves basically the same type of conduct” as in Cambra’s pending 2016 case.

On Monday, police found hollowed-out cans like the ones Cambra allegedly was using to store drugs in his 2016 case, Martin said.

In the earlier case, Cambra has pleaded not guilty to first-degree methamphetamine trafficking, possessing drug paraphernalia and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug. He had been released after a $500,000 bail bond was posted in the case.

After Cambra’s latest arrest, his bail in that case was surrendered. Police called to inform the court about the bail bond surrender and also reported that Cambra was complaining of chest pains and not for the first time, said 2nd Circuit Judge Peter Cahill.

Defense attorney Myles Breiner said Cambra was hospitalized before being released Wednesday evening and was at home recovering.

“There were concerns about keeping him at the hospital because he’s very vulnerable to COVID-19,” Breiner said.

He said he was surprised that Cambra’s bond was surrendered.

“He’s been in compliance, notwithstanding the new allegations,” Breiner said. “He hasn’t left the island.”

Martin asked for Cambra’s bail to be maintained at $500,000.

Both Breiner and Cambra appeared by videoconference for the court hearing Thursday.

Judge Cahill gave Cambra until noon Thursday to post the $500,000 bail or report to the Maui Community Correctional Center. As of Thursday afternoon, Cambra hadn’t turned himself in at the jail, according to a declaration filed by Martin.

Starting at $4.80/week.
