A 32-year-old Haiku man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after crashing into an embankment on Thursday evening, according to the Maui Police Department.
The 1998 Toyota 4Runner was traveling south on Ulumalu Road about 355 feet south of Kamalii Place when the driver lost control, crossed the center line and hit an embankment lined with bamboo trees, according to a preliminary investigation. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the roadway, police said.
Medics took the man to Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Police said the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and that the airbags did not deploy.
The preliminary investigation indicated that alcohol and speed may be factors. The involvement of drugs has not been determined, as the investigation is still pending.
As of Thursday, there had been 10 traffic fatalities in the county, compared to 23 at the same time in 2019.
