Police will conduct fireworks enforcement operations through the New Year's weekend.
Under state law, it's illegal to import, transfer, sell or use aerial fireworks without a permit. Police said the law establishes criminal liability for a homeowner, renter or other person responsible for real property who intentionally, knowingly or recklessly allows someone to possess, ignite or cause to explode any aerial device while on the property.
Criminal penalties include fines of $500 to $2,000.
Fireworks can be ignited legally only from 9 p.m. New Year's Eve to 1 a.m. New Year's Day.
Police said assistance from the public is appreciated in helping to enforce violations. Witness statements, photographs and video recordings that show the offense and can be authenticated by one or more witnesses are sufficient for officers arriving on scene, police said.
Over the Christmas weekend, police issued two citations for fireworks violations in neighborhoods in Makawao and Waiehu.
