Baldwin High School senior Milene Homalon is joined by (from right) DUI Task Force Sgt. Nick Krau and DUI Task Force officers Stephen Kelly, Rahul Mehra, Caleb Guarriello and Steven Landsiedel and officer Max Kincaid Jr. at a sign-waving against drunken driving Thursday afternoon on Kaahumanu Avenue fronting Queen Ka’ahumanu Center. The 17-year-old Haiku resident organized the activity to involve the community in her senior project. About two dozen people, including the officers and Homalon’s friends and family members, showed up for the sign-waving, drawing honks from passing vehicles. “Drunk driving impacts society a lot,” she said. “Spreading awareness to the community can help a lot.” As part of her project, Homalon interviewed Krau and others, sat in on a DUI trial and observed a holiday DUI checkpoint where four people were arrested for impaired driving. Krau said officers were glad to join the sign-waving. “It’s not very often we’re contacted by a high school student who wants to do a project on impaired driving, so I was very excited when I heard she was taking an interest in such an important issue in our community,” he said.
