WAILUKU -- A woman was arrested after she allegedly pointed a loaded pistol at another woman during an altercation Tuesday at a Makawao residence, according to a police investigation.
Melanie Sauer, 49, was charged with keeping a pistol in an improper place, first-degree terroristic threatening, third-degree assault and keeping ammunition in an improper place.
She appeared by videoconference from the Maui Police Department for her initial appearance Thursday in Wailuku District Court.
Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Kent asked for bail to be kept at $6,000 for Sauer, who was a tenant at the residence where the altercation occurred.
The other woman reported arriving at the residence for an acupuncture appointment when Sauer began filming and taking pictures of the woman, Kent said. He said the woman asked Sauer to stop before she allegedly hit the other woman and the two fell to the ground and a struggle followed.
Sauer allegedly pulled a loaded pistol from her purse and pointed it at the other woman, Kent said.
He said the pistol wasn't registered and had been reported stolen in West Virginia.
Sauer was arrested at 1:10 p.m., police records show.
She has no criminal convictions, Kent said.
Deputy Public Defender William Pannell asked for Sauer to be released on supervision.
He said she has possible other places to stay.
Judge Kirstin Hamman kept bail at $6,000.
"The court is concerned, given the nature of the charges, the violence involved and the use of a loaded firearm," she said.
Sauer was ordered to have no contact with the other woman and to stay away from the residence.
