A Maui Community Correctional Center inmate who tested positive for COVID-19 was a new admission who already was in mandatory intake quarantine, the Department of Public Safety reported late Monday afternoon.
The inmate will remain in medical isolation, the department said.
The COVID-19 case was the first reported at the Wailuku jail, where 288 inmates were housed as of Jan. 18.
In court Tuesday, a hearing that had been scheduled for an inmate was delayed for two weeks after it was reported that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and was in isolation at the jail. The inmate was transported to the jail Friday. Another inmate refused to be tested and wasn't transported to court Tuesday.
As of Monday, 285 COVID-19 tests had been administered to inmates at Maui Community Correctional Center, with one positive result, according to the Department of Public Safety.
"All correctional facilities continue to mass test inmates and staff," the department said in a statement.
