A Department of Public Safety official called the COVID-19 cluster at the Maui Community Correctional Center "under control," after the number of active inmate cases declined to 13 at the Wailuku jail Tuesday.
The department reported 16 more inmate recoveries and one negative test result Tuesday.
"MCCC hasn't seen a positive case reported in five days," Tommy Johnson, deputy director for corrections for the department, said in a statement Tuesday. "All the credit goes to our hardworking and dedicated MCCC health care and facility staff who have been working tirelessly long hours, following the pandemic plan to medically isolate, quarantine and cohort inmates, and ultimately bring the cluster under control."
Since Feb. 1, 85 cases of COVID have been reported at the jail, with 72 inmates reported to have recovered.
No inmates have required hospitalization due to COVID-19, according to the department.
On Tuesday, 14 inmates were in medical isolation and 169 were in quarantine.
As of Monday, 309 inmates were housed at the jail, exceeding both its operational capacity of 301 and design capacity of 209.
