WAILUKU -- A Molokai man was arrested after he allegedly fired shots in a residence after fighting with his ex-girlfriend and dragging her to a car.
Ama Jacobs, 34, was charged with prohibited possession of a firearm, prohibited possession of firearm ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm on a public highway, keeping a loaded firearm in an improper place, first-degree burglary, two counts of first-degree criminal property damage, three counts of first-degree terroristic threatening and two counts of first-degree reckless endangering.
Police were called to a residence on Farrington Avenue in Kualapuu on Friday afternoon to investigate a report that Jacobs was shooting a gun in the residence, according to a declaration filed in court to support the charges.
Witnesses told police that Jacobs arrived at the residence at about 3:25 p.m. Friday and fought with his ex-girlfriend on the shoulder of the road fronting the residence before trying to drag her into his car. Others intervened before she and another man went back into the residence.
Jacobs was seen retrieving a rifle from the trunk of his car and approaching the residence before a shot was fired through a living room window into a kitchen window across the room, according to the declaration.
Jacobs kicked open the front door and went into the house, where he and the man struggled in the hallway over the rifle before Jacobs fired the weapon again, with the bullet going through a door frame, witnesses told police. The man took the rifle outside and unloaded it before he and Jacobs fought and Jacobs took the rifle, got into his car and fled with his ex-girlfriend on a dirt road, according to the declaration.
She was alone when she returned to the residence in his car at about 6 p.m., police reported.
Jacobs was arrested shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday in Kualapuu, according to police.
He appeared by videoconference from the courthouse cellblock for his initial appearance Tuesday afternoon in Molokai District Court, convening in Wailuku.
Deputy Prosecutor Lewis Littlepage asked for bail to be increased from $30,000 to $50,000 for Jacobs, who is on probation for charges including prohibited possession of a firearm, prohibited possession of ammunition, keeping an unloaded firearm in an improper place and keeping ammunition in an improper place.
Jacobs has prior convictions for second-degree assault, two counts of felony abuse, abuse, third-degree assault, two counts of violating an order for protection and three counts of contempt of court, Littlepage said.
Judge Chris Dunn kept bail at $30,000 for Jacobs, who was also being held on a $50,000 probation violation warrant.
