Neighbors in need
Active community organizer Nicole Huguenin and a group of volunteers started Maui Flood Needs to help bring in donations for residents impacted by the Haiku flooding event earlier this month.
“From my experience in disaster recovery, these types of things can take years to replace, it’s the least we can do as a community to look in our pantries, our garages or even our gardens to see what we can share and replace for these ohanas as they rebuild their homes, yards and businesses,” Huguenin said Sunday.
Items being sought for homes include washer and dryers, flooring, storage containers and pantry foods. Yard and farm supplies like fencing, wheelbarrows, organic soil and tools can also be donated.
For small businesses impacted by the flood, donations that would be helpful include art supplies, laptops and construction tools.
