State of the County to take place virtually
Mayor Michael Victorino announced that the county will hold its first-ever virtual State of the County address due to COVID-19 rules limiting public gatherings.
The speech, which typically takes place in a large venue before a live audience, has instead been prerecorded and will be broadcast at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on Akaku cable channel 55 and online at www.akaku.org.
“I wanted to give my speech in West Maui this year and made a commitment two years ago to Maui Preparatory Academy to use its new Bozich Center, a location that would have been convenient for West Maui residents,” Victorino said in a news release Wednesday. “To keep my commitment, my staff arranged to have the speech prerecorded there in Napili.”
Last year’s State of the County took place at the recently opened South Maui Community Park Gym.
“My speech will focus on the trials and triumphs of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic, share Maui County’s accomplishments and provide a community vision for a post-pandemic ‘new normal,'” Victorino said. “I invite our residents to take part by watching this first-ever virtual event.”
