Driftwood comes alive

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photo

Viliami Tangatailoa carves a tiki out of milo wood Thursday near the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina. He and his father, Kalolo Tangatailoa, alternate working at the Island Wood Carving Hawaii display. “I’ve been doing this 35 years,” Tangatailoa said. “I’m a fifth-generation woodcarver.” Tangatailoa said his craft has taken him around the country to work, create and learn from others.
