Jail cluster reaches 100 cases, King’s Cathedral cluster at 77

The Maui News

A cluster at the Maui Community Correctional Center had reached 100 cases, while a cluster connected to King’s Cathedral and Chapels had grown to 77, according to the state Department of Health.

Maui County continued to have the most active clusters under investigation across the state, with 12 outbreaks spanning the jail, the church, a food supplier, an educational setting and multiple clusters in the travel industry.

At the Wailuku jail, 16 more inmates tested negative, keeping the number of active cases at two, according to the state Department of Public Safety on Thursday. Two inmates were in isolation and 170 were in quarantine.

The cluster, which started Feb. 1 and grew steadily throughout March, has slowed in recent weeks as more inmates recover and test negative. Jail officials considered the cluster enough “under control” to begin transporting some inmates to court for appearances.

King’s Cathedral, meanwhile, has seen more than 20 cases since the Health Department first announced a cluster connected to the church last week. The department, which rarely identifies specific locations of clusters, warned of an “imminent risk” to the community after the church cluster reached 55 cases and reportedly spilled over into a school and a workplace.

DOH spokesman Brooks Baehr confirmed Thursday that the the 77 cases attributed to a place of worship in the weekly cluster report on Thursday were associated with King’s Cathedral. He said it was too soon to tell whether the rise in cases was due to in-person Easter services.

“We do not believe enough time has passed for any new cases from possible transmission of COVID-19 on Easter Sunday to show up in this week’s cluster report,” Baehr said.

According to the report, 68 cases have been associated with the primary setting and nine with places outside the primary setting.

Other outbreaks under investigation in Maui County include four clusters of 60 cases in other occupational settings, which include offices, retail establishments and first responders; four clusters of 39 cases in travel, lodging and tourism; one cluster of 24 cases at a food supplier and one cluster of 13 cases in an educational setting.
