A temporary group of three Maui County Fire and Public Safety Commission members will recommend the next steps in selecting a new fire chief, after the commission received two applications for the job.
In addition to investigating the backgrounds of the applicants, the group could discuss whether the number of applicants is sufficient or whether additional recruitment should be done.
Commissioners, meeting online, voted Wednesday to create the permitted interaction group to assist the commission in the selection of a fire chief.
The new chief would replace Fire Chief David Thyne, who is retiring July 1 after a 33-year career, including nearly three years as chief.
Commission Chairman Kyle Ginoza said the commission received two applications for the job as administrative head of the department by the May 16 deadline.
He said the position was advertised in The Maui News from April 16 to 27 and in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser from April 19 to 23.
The job that has a starting salary of $158,851. Candidates must have at least five years' experience in fire control, including at least three years in an administrative capacity.
Vice Chairwoman Lisa Vares and commission members Dwight Burns and Donna Sterling volunteered to be members of the temporary group. The group's scope includes reviewing the recruitment notice, establishing the interview process and questions to be asked and developing scoring sheets for candidates. The group would submit its reports to the full commission for deliberation.
Ginoza said the next meeting date for the commission would be determined based on the progress of the temporary group.
