In-Person read aloud: A refreshing change

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photos

First photo: South Maui state Rep. Tina Wildberger (from left) and Kihei Elementary School “Library Lady” Joanne Laird take turns reading aloud the book “Sofia Valdez, Future Prez” by Andrea Beaty as fourth-grade teacher Rachel McClain shows the illustrations to her class Tuesday afternoon on the school’s campus. Laird said it was the first time all year kids at the school have been together for an in-person read aloud program. The book provided by Rutgers University’s program to get girls interested in leadership details a second-grade student’s efforts to fight City Hall to turn a trash heap into a community park. Afterward, Wildberger answered a variety of questions from her young constituents.

Second photo: Part-time Kihei Elementary School teacher Joanne Laird reads to students Tuesday. The retired California school vice principal said she loves working with students. “I’m the library lady,” she said. “That’s my job and I love it. It’s the best job I have had in 34 years in education.”
