WAILUKU -- A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shoplifting from two stores at the Shops at Wailea and from Hi-Tech Surf Sports in Kahului.
Steven Sarol was charged with three counts of second-degree theft and resisting arrest.
Although the prosecution asked for bail to be reduced to $10,000 during Sarol's initial appearance Wednesday in Wailuku District Court, Judge Blaine Kobayashi kept bail at $15,000 for Sarol.
He was arrested Sunday and charged with the three thefts that occurred April 29. Sarol is charged with stealing merchandise valued at more than $750 each from Sunglass Hut, Gucci and Hi-Tech Surf Sports.
In social media posts, Hi-Tech Surf Sports posted video and photos of a shoplifter who stole a 6.0 North Carve kite valued at $1,329, along with clothing and other items before driving away in a silver Toyota 4Runner. The thief was described as having a Bad Boy eyes tattoo on the back of his neck and tattoos on his arms.
Sarol is on probation for second-degree theft and habitual DUI, Deputy Prosecutor Lewis Littlepage said in court Wednesday. He said Sarol also has convictions for second-degree assault, three counts of abuse, five counts of contempt of court, driving while his license was suspended, driving while his license was revoked, second-degree terroristic threatening, two counts of violating an order for protection, two counts of harassment, three counts of criminal property damage, four counts of DUI and disorderly conduct.
Sarol asked to be released from jail on supervision.
He has had a full-time job for the last six months and lives in Makawao with his grandmother, said Deputy Public Defender Gustavo Gonzalez.
"I'm not going to run away," Sarol said.
He said he has a 6-month-old child and his girlfriend is pregnant.
Based on his conviction last year for second-degree theft, Sarol faces mandatory minimum sentencing if convicted of the theft charges, according to the complaint against him.
